What is latte art?
Latte art is the craft of pouring steamed milk into espresso in a controlled manner to form decorative designs visible on the drink's surface.
Latte art refers to the technique of pouring heated and frothed milk into a shot of espresso to create patterns and images on top of the drink. The barista controls the flow, angle, and movement of the milk pitcher to direct the foam and liquid into deliberate designs before they combine fully.
Common designs include the heart, created by pouring a thin stream down the centre and drawing the pitcher toward the drinker; the rosetta or leaf, formed by pouring in a wave motion while moving the cup backward and forward; and the tulip, made with multiple pours to layer overlapping shapes. Simpler freehand designs can also be drawn directly into the crema using a milk pitcher spout or small tool.
Latte art serves both practical and aesthetic purposes. It indicates the barista has achieved proper milk texture, temperature, and espresso crema quality, all of which affect how the drink tastes. A well-executed pour requires skill and timing developed through practice. For cafes in Puchong and across Malaysia, latte art has become part of the specialty coffee experience, signalling attention to craft and presentation. While it does not alter the coffee's flavour, it adds a visual dimension that many customers value, particularly in specialty coffee venues where consistency and technique matter.
